Per OECD testing, the 'Best & Brightest' in America (& Wisconsin) are dead last in math/reading vs. all 15 of their First World counterpart “Best & Brightest”!
The USA is #34 in world math scores!
In Finland, only one in ten applicants are admitted to teacher training, in South Korea 15%!
The very poor state of Mississippi spends less than half of what Wisconsin spends on K-12 per child education; yet their 4th grade reading scores are 1.5 grades ahead of Wisconsin, and their 8th grade reading scores, though still behind, are rising more rapidly. Certainly, such benchmarking is not global nor totally “apples to apples,” but still, clearly, focus, commitment and clear goals and then brutally loving implementation are critical!
Wisconsin does not take any tests that compare directly with scores of foreign countries! But, despite the recent geopolitical tensions, we in Wisconsin DO still live and work, like it or not, not in just our 35 million state acres which we love, but also in the big and competitive world!
